Pediatric Research Laboratory RESI-ALLIANT KID

Pediatric Research Laboratory RESI-ALLIANT KID
(Research on Evidence-based Services and Innovative strategies conducted in ALLIANce and True partnership with Key stakeholders to Improve the lives of children with Developmental disabilities and their families)

Description

Our research agenda comprises 2 topics. The goals are to:

  • Optimize and standardize evidence-based telerehabilitation services for children with brain-based developmental disabilities (BBDD) and their families; and
  • Support and improve the mental health of children with BBDD and their families as they are transitioning into the adolescence life stage. Strategies for patient-oriented research are central to our research. Patient- and clinical-partners will be authentically engaged throughout as research team members to inform all parts of projects.

TOPIC 1: Using a snapshot observational study design in form of a national online survey, we will determine the impacts, barriers/facilitators, usage trends, appropriateness, and satisfaction with telerehabilitation, from the perspectives of rehabilitation professionals and patients/families. Survey results will be complemented with reports from focus groups with clinicians and semi-structured interviews with caregivers. We will proceed to develop, launch, and evaluate the impact of comprehensive, targeted, and evidence-based knowledge translation tools optimizing telerehabilitation practices.

TOPIC 2: In an exploratory study design, we will develop a resilience telehealth-coaching program supporting transition into adolescence of children/youth with BBDD and their families. To do so, we will explore relevant themes/topics of interest, and features for the program. The perspectives of patients and families, as well as clinical experts will be sought using a mixed-method approach. Once designed, using a quasi-experimental pilot study design, we will determine the program’s feasibility and preliminary effectiveness in improving mental health outcomes in children with BBDD and their families.
