SUMMARY:

The unemployment rate for people with visual impairments is still a staggering 70%. This is particularly problematic in the health and science disciplines, where people with disabilities remain grossly under-represented. The presenter is herself a blind researcher with lived experience. Her presentation will provide an overview of this research project, which will explore the systemic barriers faced by post-secondary students with visual impairments, and then co-design, implement and evaluate community-based solutions. Participants will learn what is known about barriers related to accessibility and systemic ableism in this population, what initiatives exist to support blind students, and how this collaborative research will advance efforts in this area.

Speaker:

Natalina Martiniello, Ph.D.

Natalina Martiniello holds a PhD in Vision Science from the Université de Montréal and is also a Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist.
As a person who is blind, she remains committed to advancing accessibility and inclusion. She is Past President of Braille Literacy Canada, Director of the International Council of English Braille and Vice President of the International Network of Researchers with Visual Impairment and their Allies.
