Job description

The Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux de l’Estrie Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke (CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS) is seeking applications to fill the position of scientific director of one of its research infrastructures, the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS Research Centre on Aging. This position also includes the direction of the Research Centre on Aging of the Université de Sherbrooke.

Main responsibilities

  • Responsible for the scientific direction of the CdRV and in liaison with the general management of the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS and the Université de Sherbrooke, the Scientific Director ensures the implementation, follow-up and adaptation of the Centre’s strategic development plan. He or she is assisted in his or her duties by an assistant to the scientific director who reports to the DCMU and manages the research infrastructure, two axis directors, a technology development advisor, a clinical development advisor and an academic affairs advisor.
The director must, in particular:
  • Develop scientific leadership and support platforms required for the development of world-class research activities at the CoRV;
  • In collaboration with the axis directors, ensure that the research programming of the axes is in line with the Centre’s strategic objectives and consolidate their development through the recruitment of high-calibre researchers;
  • Maintain the CoRV’s positioning with its internal and external partners;
  • Represent the CoRV and act as its official spokesperson with various authorities.
  • To ensure its influence on the provincial, national and international scene;
  • In collaboration with the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS, ensure sound and transparent management of the CoRV’s human, financial, material and information resources;
  • Plan and manage an annual budget to ensure the implementation of the scientific program, in accordance with the requirements of the funding agencies and the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS, which is accountable for the management of these funds;
  • Plan and manage the portion of the annual budget coming from the Université de Sherbrooke, ensuring the deployment of research and training activities, in accordance with the requirements of the granting agencies and the Université de Sherbrooke, which is accountable for the management of these funds;
  • Prepare and submit applications for renewal of the research infrastructure grant to the FRQS and ensure that the level of scientific excellence is maintained according to the criteria of this program. The incumbent will be a seasoned, world-class scientist, visionary and scientific leader with a record of outstanding achievement in a field of research relevant to the Centre’s mission.

Profile required

  • Hold a doctorate in a health or social science discipline, or in a discipline relevant to the field of intervention of the CoRV.
  • Have significant experience in the field of research in the university environment and in the health and social services network.
  • Have an excellent research record and demonstrate a broad scientific outlook – Recognized scientific credibility in the field of research on aging.
  • Extensive knowledge of research on aging in Quebec, in the rest of Canada and elsewhere in the world.
  • Demonstrated leadership in scientific facilitation and significant experience in the management of research organizations.
  • Proven ability to supervise the scientific work of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to anticipate and evaluate the contribution of research, its innovative character and its usefulness.
  • Good communication skills, demonstrating the ability to relate to people at all levels, and the ability to negotiate successfully and diplomatically.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and in partnership. Good interpersonal and listening skills.
  • Ability to play a key role in structuring high-level research activities, both in terms of scientific programming and funding.
  • Have a good knowledge of the challenges and priorities surrounding seniors in Quebec and ideally the Quebec health and social services network.
  • Demonstrate the potential to be an excellent representative of the Research Centre, promoting it and publicizing its mission and achievements, with the goal of raising awareness and stimulating support for research at the provincial, national and international levels.
  • Fluency in English and French, both written and spoken, and good communication skills in both languages.
  • Any other experience relevant to the position may be considered.
