Professor Rodrigo Pegado will present his research on the central mechanisms of pain using electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and computational modeling approaches. More specifically, his work aims to identify and characterize the distinct patterns of brain activity associated with pain (i.e., neural signatures of pain) across a range of clinical conditions and populations (e.g., post Chikungunya Virus-induced Arthralgia, post-amputation neuropathy, fibromyalgia, and depression). This enhanced understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying pain may support the development of more targeted, personalized, and effective neuromodulation interventions for affected populations.
Particular attention will also be given to populations whose chronic pain conditions remain understudied, including individuals undergoing hemodialysis, those experiencing dysmenorrhea, and people living with chikungunya-associated arthralgia.
Objectives of the conference
- Present recent advances in the study of central pain mechanisms using electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and computational modeling.
- Improve understanding of the neural signatures of pain, namely the distinctive patterns of brain activity associated with different pain conditions.
- Explore how these findings may contribute to improving the assessment, understanding, and ultimately the management of chronic pain across diverse clinical populations.

BIOGRAPHy
Professor Rodrigo Pegado holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy from Universidade Potiguar, as well as a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Psychobiology from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Brazil. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship and served as a Visiting Professor at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Harvard Medical School.
Professor Pegado is the Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Health Sciences at the UFRN and leads the Clinical Neuromodulation Research Group (NeuroClin). His research focuses on the use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for pain modulation, restoration of functional abilities, and the promotion of mental health.
