Open science and how to embrace it

Open science is the practice of science where transparent and accessible knowledge is shared and developed through collaborative networks. While most researchers only think of open access journals, open science covers the life cycle of research across ideation, data collection and analysis, publication, and knowledge mobilization. In this talk, I aim to break down the open science life cycle, and show how researchers can make small changes to include open science practices. I will outline the benefits of embracing open science practices to the researcher, and the benefits to science.

Aaron Johnson is an associate professor of Psychology and associate dean of research at Concordia University, and a CRIR researcher at the Lethbridge-Layton-Mackay Rehabilitation Centre and the Institute Nazareth Louis Braille. He is developing an open access low vision database, with data from retinal imaging, cognition, balance, and functional vision in rehabilitation clients. His research uses this database to study the interaction between retinal physiology, the impact on function and rehabilitation outcomes. His lab has used open science practices for several years.
