About this conference
Effects of an exercise intervention on balance, gait, brain plasticity in Parkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s disease (PD) has a detrimental impact on balance, gait, and cognition. Evidence suggests that exercise can improve balance and gait performance and induces changes in the neural system. Prof. Franzen’s research group has developed an exercise program specifically targeted at PD symptoms (the HiBalance program) and successfully conducted three large intervention trials with different designs and refined the exercise program, explored exercise induced changes in the brain, characterized responders and PD subtypes as well as examined implementation strategies. Findings from the latest trial – a well-powered, double-blind RCT showed no group effects of the exercise intervention. The divergent results from the intervention studies and the mix of responders and non-responders raises important questions on who benefits from exercise interventions and how to optimize exercise for people with PD.
