Berkay Karahacioğlu, MD, MRCP
Speciality Registrar in Rehabilitation Medicine in London | National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London
Member of UK Rehabilitation Outcomes Collaborative (UKROC)
Dr. Berkay Karahacıoğlu is a physician specializing in Rehabilitation Medicine with expertise in internal medicine, neurology, and medical education. He focuses his research on the cost efficiency and economic impact of specialist rehabilitation on healthcare systems. After graduating with honors from Gazi University Medical School, Turkey, Dr. Karahacıoğlu trained in emergency medicine, neurosurgery, and internal medicine in both Turkey and the UK. He now specializes in neurorehabilitation, particularly spinal cord injury rehabilitation. His research uses tools like the Northwick Park Dependency Scale (NPDS) and the Northwick Park Care Needs Assessment (NPCNA) to assess the economic benefits of rehabilitation services, aiming to improve resource allocation and patient outcomes in healthcare systems.
Conference description:
In Canada, healthcare systems face growing challenges, particularly in terms of funding and resource allocation. With limited resources, it is crucial to optimize care to maximize the benefits for the population. Specialist rehabilitation offers a cost-effective solution, improving patient independence and reducing long-term care costs, yet its benefits are not always immediately visible.
This presentation will examine the economic value of specialist rehabilitation, using tools such as the Northwick Park Dependency Scale (NPDS) and the Northwick Park Care Needs Assessment (NPCNA) to assess care costs from admission to discharge. These tools allow for a comprehensive understanding of the cost implications based on patient dependency levels and care needs, showing how rehabilitation can reduce long-term healthcare and social care expenditures. Dr. Karahacioğlu will present a recent study on trauma patients that demonstrates the cost-effectiveness of rehabilitation, with rehabilitation costs being offset within months, particularly in cases involving traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries. These findings highlight the importance of prioritizing rehabilitation in healthcare policy, not only for improved patient outcomes but also for more effective management of healthcare resources and long-term savings.
Target Audience:
his event is primarily intended for CRIR researchers and managers, but anyone interested in health economics is welcome.
