BIOGRAPhy

Dr. Liliana Alvarez is an Associate Professor (with tenure) in the School of Occupational Therapy at Western University, and the former graduate chair of the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy Graduate Program. Currently on her research sabbatical, Dr. Alvarez received her Occupational Therapy degree in Colombia, where she also obtained an MSc in Biomedical Sciences. She then completed her PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Alberta, Canada, and her Postdoctoral Fellowship at Western University’s School of Occupational Therapy. Dr. Alvarez’s program of research examines the community mobility of at-risk populations across the life span, including those driving under the influence of cannabis, or medically at-risk individuals, as well as the transportation barriers faced by underserved populations. Her research explores the unique connections between technology and occupational therapy, including the use of assistive technology, simulation, and automation. Dr. Alvarez has been an invited participant at the WHO Assistive Technology Summit in Geneva, and more recently served as the Programme Coordinator for Research for the World Federation of Occupational Therapists between 2016 to 2022.

Conference description

The anatomy of a crash: Reducing risk, advancing equity, and empowering community mobility

In this presentation, Dr. Alvarez will take the audience on a road trip across her program of research, highlighting the landmarks that have become turning points in her line of inquiry around driving and community mobility. By integrating and highlighting the work of her trainees, Dr. Alvarez will provide an overview of a team-based, interdisciplinary, and evidence informed program to research that evolves at the interface between technology, simulation, equity, and injury prevention across the life span.  Dr. Alvarez will draw particular attention to the ways her research methods have evolved in response to contextual factors and uncovered findings, and the innovative ways her team is seeking to develop the right tools to answer the most central questions around driving safety, occupational therapy community mobility practice, and community mobility as a human right.
