Axes and thematic units

Please note that Québec health institutions have been operating under the name Santé Québec since June 15, 2026.
Some pages published before that date may still contain the former CISSS and CIUSSS designations.

CRIR orientates its research teams around two main axes where interdisciplinarity is at the heart of the projects for the diverse clientele served by each clinical setting:

Axis 1: Sensory, motor and cognitive functions and activities

  • Thematic Unit 1: Functional mechanisms
  • Thematic Unit 2: Physical and cognitive activities

Axis 2: Participation, social inclusion and rehabilitation services

  • Thematic Unit 1: Individuals, loved ones and the community
  • Thematic Unit 2: Services, systems and policies

Research axes coordinator : Mohamed Mathlouthi

These two axes are directly related to the clinical programming of the CRIR sites and the needs expressed by people with physical disabilities and their families, health care professionals, and communities. These axes and their thematic units are aimed at understanding different components of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in relation to people of all ages living with a significant and persistent physical disability.

For each of these two axes, effective operation is ensured by two Axis Co-Leads. The Research Axes Coordinator supports the co-leads and their activities. Meetings are held two to four times per year. Close collaboration between the axes is also encouraged, making it possible to examine, among other things, the functional and psychosocial impacts of technologies on users and on their interactions with the environment.
